Iranian political prisoners on hunger strike

Political prisoners in Iran, with their rights constantly violated, see no choice but resorting to hunger strike

Iran, Aug. 13, 2019 - The hunger strike of four Iranian political prisoners in Urmia prison in northwest Iran continues. The names of the hunger strikers are Mostafa Sabzi, Ghader Salimi, Bashir Pirmavaneh and Rahmi Tourgout. Reports indicate that the health conditions of these political prisoners are deteriorating and they are suffering from severely low blood pressure and significant weight loss. Bashir Pirmavaneh and Rahmi Tourgout started their hunger strike on July 22, Mostafa Sabzi and Ghader Salimi started theirs on July 23.

Hunger strike by Akbar Bagheri, political prisoner, and supporter of MEK in the Prison of Greater Tehran

Akbar Bagheri, a political prisoner, and supporter of the Iranian opposition group People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), incarcerated in the Greater Tehran Prison, went on hunger strike. Bagheri started his strike on August 7, protesting his deteriorating health and legal conditions, and his exile to the Greater Tehran Prison.

The torturers of the Iranian regime transferred Bagheri to the ward of dangerous criminals on the fourth day of his strike to intimidate him. Bagheri had previously gone on a five-day hunger strike in protest to lack of medical services and his transfer.

He went on strike while his intestines were bleeding and were scheduled to be taken to the surgery. In 2017, security forces attacked and arrested Bagheri in his home. After two months of severe interrogation and solitary confinement in Diesel Abad prison of Kermanshah, western Iran, Bagheri was temporarily released on bail.

He was arrested again in December 2017 during protests by clients of corrupt credit institutions in front of the regime’s Majlis (parliament) and was transferred to the notorious Evin prison in Tehran. Bagheri was kept in the solitary confinement cells of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) in Evin for 48 days and was transferred to Ward 4 in March.
