Contract teachers in Iran held protests on Sunday and Monday, August 4-5, in front of the Ministry of Education in Tehran in protest to the non-implementation of the law to officially employ them as full-time staff. They chanted: “I’m not leaving until I get my rights.” The anti-regime protest on Sunday was more than 1000-people strong and included contract teachers from all across Iran. On Monday, their protest spread from Tehran to other cities including Ahvaz, Isfahan, Tabriz, and Kermanshah. Employed and retired teachers took part in those rallies. In Ahvaz, the protest took place in front of the Khuzestan Education Department on Monday. They demanded official hiring terms and chanted slogans such as “30,000 part-time teachers need to be hired” and “What happens to the state-allocated funds.”  The protestors also held signs stating other demands. “The oppressed part-time teacher won’t accept discrimination,” one sign read. Protestors demanded to be hired before schools open in September. One of the part-time teachers, who had participated in this protest from the western Lorestan province said, “I worked in kindergarten for 12 years. They gathered outside the regime’s Ministry of Education and were seen holding banners and signs reading their demands, including: “Part-time teachers have suffered cruelty and will no longer accept discrimination.” The protesters are demanding their job status be clarified before the start of the new school year on September 23. “Open your windows and impose justice,” these protesting part-time teachers chanted to Education Ministry officials inside the building.
