Every year, the day November 25 comes as a grim reminder that we have a long way to go for achieving gender parity. There are still many countries in the world where women cannot fully exercise the right to shape their own destiny. Violence against women is another detestable vestige of the most patriarchal societies inherited by our generation.
It may seem that we have come a long way since the Dark Ages, but there are still some countries in the world that have made little progress in according equal rights to women and men. There is even a country where misogyny is the order of the day and where women have no legal rights.
It may come as a shock to many, but Iran continues to run in this way. The Iranian regime may keep up pretenses in public on issues related to women’s rights, but in practice, women remain second-class citizens in that country.
Subhuman treatment of women
It is not difficult to prove that Iranian theocrats are opposed to the idea of gender equality. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been quoted as saying: “Gender equality is ‘Zionist plot’ aimed at corrupting the role of women in society.” In Iran’s version of religious law, women are considered property.
Their inheritance is half of what men receive and women are not allowed to leave the country without their husband’s consent. They are also forced to observe a very strict dress code. There are several security measures in place in Iran to impose these laws. The most repressive one is the infamous ‘morality police’ that roams around cities arresting young women for not observing the dress code.
There are gruesome videos on YouTube and other social media showing how women are treated in Iran for what they wear. In a recent incident, a 14-year-old girl was beaten and detained for wearing ripped jeans in Iran (one of many such cases of police brutality against women). After her arrest by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) unit, she said: “I still carry the bruises sustained from their beatings on my face ... my ribs still hurt.”
Irrespective of their position in society, women in Iran have no right to travel without the consent of their husband or father. Hassan Rouhani and his predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had once made bogus promises of giving women more rights in order to garner their votes. In May this year, Rouhani had spread the word that he might appoint a women minister in his cabinet. But soon after his sham election, he did not include any woman in his cabinet.

Iranian women defy repression
However, Iranian women seize every opportunity to show their resistance against their ill-treatment by the regime. After Khamenei’s ridiculous fatwa banning women from riding a bike in public last year, women in Iran came out in droves riding their bikes in defiance. According to the state-run media, Khamenei issued a decree on 10 September 2016 wherein he said: “Riding a bicycle often attracts the attention of men and exposes the society to corruption, and as contravenes women’s chastity so it must be abandoned”.
Since the first day of the installation of the regime, Iranian women have resisted their attempts at oppression. Back in the day, Iran like other countries of the Middle East could hardly imagine any role for women other than staying at home and taking care of children.
One woman took the lead in this struggle for freedom which was no longer about just freeing Iranian women but the entire Iranian society, which was taken hostage by the regime. Maryam Rajavi, president of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an educated woman has done the impossible and instilled thousands of Iranian men and women with the idea that all citizens in the country can struggle for a common cause: Freedom.
She has proven through her leadership role that the same deprived and underprivileged woman is no different than her male counterpart in struggling for a free and democratic society. She has built a blueprint for building a better Iran with her 10-point plan, wherein women are deemed fully equal to men in all spheres of social activity.
There would be no limits for women in this new Iran. Filling the highest political positions will no longer be just a dream for women. The Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) — the biggest Iranian opposition group and a member of the NCRI — has followed her teachings for years and is now led by her.
Violence against women in Iran is institutionalized simply because half of the society is treated as crippled and in need of guidance from men; be it the male head of the family or males in the state itself. Thus, the status of women will never change in Iran as long as the present regime is in power.

These are the facts that exist in Iran, but I do not know why the eyes of Mr. Idriss Jazairy are blind to these facts.

Iranian protesters, who chastise their own government and not the U.S. for their plight, rightly understand this.” He continued, “One only wishes that the U.N. system did too.”
Hillel Neuer, the executive director of the Swiss-based UN Watch -- an independent human rights monitoring group -- told Fox News that Iran was the country that sponsored the resolution on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement in 2014 that created the position that Jazairy now holds.

In a statement hypocritical, Jazairy’s comments come on the back of a statement from E.U. leaders, who said they “deeply regret” the U.S. decision to reimpose sanctions.
“The lifting of nuclear-related sanctions is an essential part of the deal,” E.U. High Representative Federica Mogherini, along with French, German and British foreign ministers, said in a joint statement, vowing to “protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran.”

“I am grateful for the efforts of the European Union in tackling this injustice, both through diplomatic efforts and through legislation to protect European companies from American sanctions. As nationwide protests and strikes continue across Iran, entering their ninth month of continuous uprisings, and at a time where the cry for regime change and freedom is echoing throughout Iran; Iranian communities in over 20 capitals and major cities across Europe and North America, will come together in a new innovation, on Saturday, 25 August, in a joint, interactive conference to commemorate 30,000 political prisoners who were executed in the 1988 massacre in Iran.
The nationwide popular uprisings today, are the continuation of the aspirations and paths of those fallen for freedom in 1988. Those who said ‘no!’ to the henchmen and sacrificed their lives for freedom in Iran.
The Iran protests derive from deep roots within such sacrifices, and now, intertwined with the Iranian resistance, the chimes for regime change have been rung. The roots of the nationwide uprisings and its prospects will be discussed in this international conference.
The conference, which will bring together thousands of Iranians in Europe and North America for the first time online, is part of the international campaign seeking justice for the victims of the massacre. A campaign which was launched two years ago with a call by Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the NCRI, and demands an independent inquiry by the UN into the massacre, putting an end to the impunity of the perpetrators of the 1988 massacre. A massacre which has been highlighted by human rights NGOs, experts, and defenders, as one of the worst crimes against humanity since World War II.
Perpetrators of this massacre are now among the highest officials in the regime and are directly involved in suppressing the uprising.
Thousands from across the Iranian diaspora and representatives of Iranian Associations, along with prominent international social and political personalities will gather in Paris, London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Rome, Oslo, Brussels, Bern, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Bucharest, Helsinki, Gothenburg, Aarhus, Stuttgart. Survivors and relatives of the massacre will also share their experiences and observations with the participants.
Congressman Patrick Kennedy and a number of European lawmakers will be among the participants at the Paris conference.
This international gathering of the Iranian communities will begin at 5 pm CEST and 11 am EST and will be broadcasted live in Persian, English, French, and Arabic on social network and websites of the Resistance and Iranian communities.

Background information
In 1988, based on a fatwa by Khomeini, more than 30,000 political prisoners who were serving their sentences were executed for standing their grounds in defense of democracy and human rights. To expedite the executions Khomeini formed three-member death committees throughout Iran to sentence the prisoners to death within a few minutes. The victims, most of whom were members of the PMOI, were buried in mass graves. So far, no independent international investigation has been carried out in regards to this massacre, and the perpetrators of this terrible crime have never been brought to justice.
In an audio recording which was revealed in 2016, Hossein Ali Montazeri, Khomeini’s successor at the time, explicitly tells the Death Commission in Tehran that what is being carried out is the most heinous crime of the Islamic Republic in Iran’s history. In April 1989, Khomeini dismissed Montazeri for his opposition to the massacre and wrote after me you would give the country to the liberals and through them to the PMOI/MEK. In June of that year, after the death of Khomeini, Ali Khamenei became Iran’s Supreme Leader.
In recent months, many human rights organizations such as Amnesty International have presented reports on the 1988 Massacre, calling for investigations in this regard and have called for urgent reaction to the destruction of mass graves by the mullahs.

These days, with some news of the suicide, I wanted to make the last moments with my incomplete understanding as a narrative that I had written a long time ago and today I rewrote it.
