KHAMENEI’S BACK AGAINST THE WALL

Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei admits in his meeting with the members of Assembly of Experts that his regime is in crisis. Referring to the constant danger which threatens his regime, he reminded the members of the importance of loyal forces and said:
“With labels such as hardliners or extremists, the most loyal forces should not be turned away. They are the ones that stand to the last minute. In seditions of 2009 and then again 2018, they were the ones who stopped the enemy.” He added: “I have told the past presidents to use these forces that are loyal to the cause of revolution. Those are the ones that hold the grounds.”
Khamenei refers to well-fed plain-clothes thugs, agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) that are ready to kill in cold blood for his regime. They opened fire into the crowd both in 2009 and then 2018. Many young men and women were arrested, tortured, and killed by the same security forces in MOIS secret safe houses.
In clear factional fighting, Khamenei picked on Rouhani for his lack of spine in what he called “facing the enemy.” However, he admitted that loss of morals is not limited to Rouhani’s faction and it is somewhat contagious in his regime. But Khamenei made sure not to cross any lines which might inflame the society’s powder keg.
He then tried to caution his regime’s officials in general of the danger from a restless society. Khamenei tried to give the other mullahs hope while warning them of what lies ahead.
In reverse psychology, Khamenei told his audience that it’s the U.S. and Europe that are in financial and social crisis. He also shed crocodile tears for people in the west with no freedom.
Khamenei’s speech was also a confirmation that mediation between his regime and the U.S. by the Europeans has a failure. He said: “On the surface, it appears that the Europeans mediate. They talk a lot but all of it amounts to nothing. The EU countries, despite their claims, remained true to their U.S. allies.” He added: “There is no difference between them and the U.S.”
Khamenei’s back is against the wall. He prefers talking to confrontation, but on his terms. The regime’s supreme leader knows that the EU’s patience is wearing thin with the regime’s maneuvers and there is very little room left in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPA) deal for going back on commitments. Federica Mogherini, the EU foreign policy chief said that keeping JCPOA “is becoming increasingly difficult.”
The main Iranian opposition has been an internal factor and an existential threat looming on the horizon for the regime. Since January 2018 and start of uprisings in more than 140 cities that shook the regime to its core, Khamenei has maintained that the mullahs’ regime barely survived. He has put the blame squarely on the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
