The United Nations General Assembly- September 2019
The international front against the Iranian regime expands

Iran, October 28, 2019—Following the sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in September, the special committees of the UNGA have become another display of the increasing isolation of the Iranian regime. In previous years, only the UNGA Third Committee focused on the Iranian regime’s human rights violations. But this year, the UNGA’s First Committee, which specializes in disarmament and international security, also focused on the Iranian regime, and different member states condemned Tehran’s destructive policies.
The unprecedented isolation of the Iranian regime
The reason Iran has returned to the center of concerns and criticism across the globe is the recent decision of the regime to renege on its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
In a desperate move, the mullahs, who in the past couple of years face a solidifying front against their belligerence and provocative behavior, turned to their old tactic of extracting concessions from the international community through threats and aggressions. In May, the regime declared that it would be gradually retracting from its obligations under the JCPOA. The fourth step of the regime’s retreat from the nuclear deal is due in less than two weeks. And as the regime has failed to achieve any of its goals, its officials are showing increasing nervousness.
Meanwhile, in the UNGA First Committee, different member states condemned the regime’s provocative behavior. This is significant because, before the signing of the JCPOA, the First Committee mostly turned a blind eye on the regime’s belligerence and threatening behavior. At the time, the dominant policy toward the Iranian regime was appeasement, which gave the mullahs plenty of room to have its way in causing instability and insecurity across the world.
But the growing tendency of the international community to confront the Iranian regime is proof of Tehran losing its stature in the global balance of power as the appeasement policy has fallen by the wayside.
While states from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa criticized Tehran’s threat to peace and stability across the globe, Hassan Rouhani, the president of the Iranian regime, continued with his posturing and lying. In a recent trip to The Republic of Azerbaijan, Rouhani claimed that during the UNGA session, he had proposed a plan for a world “without violence and extremism,” and that other member states welcomed his plan.
Rouhani’s made this claim while not a single country supported the Iranian in the UNGA session or in any of the special committee sessions. The mullahs’ isolation in the international front was so complete that not even its propaganda-spewing state-run media and broadcasting outlets were able to report any support for Rouhani and his regime.
While the Iranian regime continues to sink in isolation, Rouhani and his foreign minister Javad Zarif constantly claim that Tehran has been able to isolate the United States and recruit all the countries across the world in their confrontation with the U.S.
Interestingly, upon returning from the UNGA session in New York, Rouhani had said that the hotel of the regime’s delegation had become of a hub of political activity and various heads of states had lined up to meet with the Iranian regime officials.
But less than a month after Rouhani’s claims, it has become evident that the regime is struggling with its allies and is becoming more isolated with every passing day.
Condemnation at the UNGA Third Committee
In the UNGA Third Committee, the regime faced even more criticism than previous years, where officials from different countries condemned the regime’s human rights abuses and its unabated use of the death penalty. Moreover, Javaid Rahman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in Iran, reported that the regime had executed at least seven children in 2018 and two others this year. Rahman also stressed that he has reliable information that 90 more juvenile offenders are awaiting execution in Iran. He added that executions in Iran remain at one of the highest levels across the world.
Interestingly, unlike previous years, where the regime dispatched Mohammad Javad Larijani, a senior advisor to Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in foreign affairs and secretary of the so-called “High Council for Human Rights” in the regime’s judiciary, to justify the mullahs’ crimes and delegitimize reports against the regime, he has remained completely silent this year.
It goes without saying that Tehran’s crimes will continue and its apologists will repeat this claim by Khamenei the Iranian opposition’s revelations and the Iranian Resistance in its entirety are “America’s conspiracies.”
The Iranian people have been witness to this propaganda by regime founder Ruhollah Khomeini and Khamenei for the past four decades. This policy has paved the path for the mullahs’ dictatorship to continue their reign of terror both inside the country and abroad. However, Tehran cannot deny the fact that the Iranian opposition PMOI/MEK is the alternative to its rule and poses a major threat as a defiant opposition force.
