Albanian police unveil Iran's plan to attack rebels
3,000 PMOI members live near Draco
Albanian police revealed they prevented several attacks by Iranian agents last year on members of the Iranian opposition group living in exile in Albania.
APJ October 27, 2019 - Police Director Ardi Veliu explained that they had disclosed the active cell of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in charge of operations abroad. "Due to intelligence, we prevented this cell from ordering more attacks on our soil by the Iranian authorities last March," he added. The prime suspects in the attack are expected to be hiding in Austria and Turkey.
In 2014, around 3,000 members of the People's Mujahideen Iranian Organization ( PMOI ) took refuge near the Albanian port of Durres, as they were repeatedly targeted in Iraq, where they lived and operated. This group, led by Maryam Rajavi in Paris, presents itself as an alternative to the current Shiite religious authority in Iran. Rajavia claims that they are striving for democracy, separation of religion and state, private investment and nuclear disarmament.
The Albanian opposition accused Prime Minister Eddie Rama of releasing this information only to divert media attention from failure, as the European Union did not turn the country on the green light to begin accession negotiations.
Last December, Albania expelled the Iranian ambassador and another Iranian diplomat on the grounds that they "harmed Albania's national security".
