Humanitarian conditions worsening in Iran’s prisons Harsh condition of prisons in Iran Iran, October 12, 2019 —Reports coming from inside Iran pertain to mounting pressure against Iranian prisoners and worsening humanitarian and human rights conditions inside Iran's prisons. In recent months, the regime has resorted to various measures to cause fear in society and dissuade people from joining protests that are ongoing in different parts of Iran. These measures coincide with the appointment of Ebrahim Raisi as the regime’s chief of the judiciary. Raisi was one of the key figures in the  1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners , most of them members and supporters of the prominent Iranian opposition movement the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran ( PMOI/MEK ). Popular protests saw the Green Zone overrun in 2016 and in 2018 they served as a nail in the coffin of former Iraqi prime minister, Haider al-Abadi. MEK supporters commemorate 1988 massacre victims in different countries London-MEK supporters Honor the victims of the 1988 massacre in front of the UK parliament Europe, October 13, 2019 —On  World Day Against the Death Penalty , supporters of  the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)  held ceremonies in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands and commemorated victims of a mass execution of Iranian prisoners. In 1988, the Iranian regime  executed 30,000 political prisoners , most of them MEK members and supporters, in the span of a few weeks. After 31 years, the incident, known as the 1988 massacre, remains an unpunished crime against humanity. Many current regime officials, including Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raisi and Justice Minister Alireza Avaei, were directly involved in the sentencing and execution of the political prisoners.
