Suppressing Female Street Vendors in Iran - a Manifestation of Double Repression of Women 21 OCTOBER 2019   EMPTY By Jubin Katiraie Increased street peddling by women in Iran is the result of the catastrophic economic situation and the spread of poverty, analysts say. Peddling is not an official job but the result of an ailing and bankrupt economy which is due to corruption in the Iranian government. The Iranian government’s economic policy has led to a large part of the middle class falling into poverty. The situation is worse for women who are mainly housewives and have no income, so they are forced to go on the streets and work as peddlers. Hard-working women who are always subject to persecution and even insults by government officials are forced to accept these things in order to earn a little something for their families. According to state media and Iran’s officials, many of these women...

In Iraq and Lebanon, Protesters Are Calling for an End to Iran’s Meddling 21 OCTOBER 2019   EMPTY Anti-government protesters near the Opera building in Beirut on Sunday By Pooya Stone For a long time, endless and unconventional wars turned the Middle East into a battlefield between regional powers. It is unfortunate that instability and lack of peace and security have become routine for the people of this region. Many innocent men, women, and even children wrestle with incredible threats and struggle to stay alive and save their families and relatives. However, it is significant that Tehran’s rulers have a main and fixed involvement in each conflict in this region. According to this policy, Iran’s Ayatollahs formed several paramilitary groups and funded them at the expense of the Iranian people. Iro...

In Lebanon, the system works for the elite October 21, 2019 Lebanese demonstrators gather at Martyrs' Square and Riad Al Solh Square during an anti-government protest against dire economic conditions and new tax regulations on messaging services like Whatsapp, in Beirut, Lebanon on 19 October 2019. “This is the most exciting, unifying thing that has happened since the end of the civil war,” said Fabio Irani, 25, a protester in Beirut. Lebanon is experiencing the rise of collective consciousness and the rejection of a sectarian division of society which has gripped the country for 29 years, since the end of the civil war in 1990. This is the culmination of decades of anger at the mismanagement of the nation by government officials, and corruption which serves only to enrich the political caste. The protesters are not just demanding the resignation of Hariri’s government, which Irani calls “Chapter one”, but the overhaul of the sectarian system. Events that have led to t...
